Lead Paint in Renovation
In 1978 the Environmental Protection Agency “banned” the use
of Lead Paint in residential uses. The Federal definition of Lead Paint
is “Any paint or surface coatings that contain lead equal to or
in excess of 1.0 milligram per square centimeter or more than .5 percent
by weight.” Lead was used in paint for durability purposes and for
color.
What is the big
deal about Lead Paint?
Lead paint dust if inhaled or ingested can cause many serious health problems,
especially in children under the age of 6 and pregnant women. Some of
the health issues in children can include nervous system and kidney damage,
decreased intelligence, attention deficit disorder, and other learning
disabilities. Also, speech, language, and behavior problems have been
seen in children exposed to lead paint. In pregnant women it can cause
miscarriages, premature birth, brain damage, and low birth weights. In
adults high blood pressure, fertility problems in men and women, digestive
problems and muscle or joint pain can result. As you can see, it is very
serious issue if not handled properly.
How can we tell
if we have lead paint in our house?
THE ONLY WAY TO TELL IF YOU HAVE LEAD IN YOUR HOUSE IS TO HAVE A CERTIFIED
LEAD TESTER TEST YOUR PAINT. A person certified to perform this test will
come to your house and cut to grooves in an area where lead paint might
be present. They will then swab over the area for 30 seconds to determine
if the chemical reacts to the paint. If it does react it will turn red;
if not then the tester will verify the test was satisfactory with a card
that has lead on it. If the test returns a positive result, it can be
assumed the rest of your home has lead paint present. If it is negative,
one or two more areas will be tested. There is no way by which you can
tell if there is lead paint other than this test or by sending a sample
to a lab.
